Mixed Media
Mixed media art combines a variety of media in a single artwork, giving artists more versatility and creativity. I particularly enjoy experimenting with different textures - papers, glass and metals with other mediums, often acrylics.

For many days and over many cuppa chais in my garden, I had been observing the subject of my painting: a pair of 'laughing doves'. I saw them create a home for their small family of chicks in a comfortable and safe niche, the shopping basket attached to my cycle! I delighted in seeing them raise their family and watch them grow bigger and stronger till they could fly away. This sweetness of birds inspired me to choose watercolors as a medium that perfectly captures the freshness and spontaneity of nature.

This painting has been done with a textured paper that had a net woven into the paper. I wetted the paper in appropriate places to gently remove the paper but leaving the net intact. This had the effect of revealing a form of a stylised ganesha that was then collaged on a painted canvas to complete the painting. Ganesha is the elephant-headed Hindu God of new beginnings.
He is worshipped before starting anything new to clear obstacles and pave the way to success.

This is a portrait of ‘Joy’ inspired by a joyful teenage girl, who turned around to look at the camera for a spontaneous click.
To create this mood, I browsed my collection of textured papers and pulled out the softer but happy colors. A soft sunshine-yellow paper covers the entire canvas to create the illusion of a pleasant day with a cool breeze and a soft sun. It seems to be an early morning sun or a late evening sun. Colourful streaks of paper slant in the background to add a playful touch to the painting.
For the face, Iused warm coloured textured papers that were carefully torn into shapes and collaged onto the canvas to create her sharp, delicate feature. Touches of black acrylic paints complete her face and a touch of red enhances her warm smile.
When you view this painting, you see a happy face turning around to invite us into her world of joy.

I often find my paintings take on an energy of their own once I start painting, and this piece was no less.
This piece started with me painting the canvas a beautiful golden hue and I brought out my mosaic pieces that I hadn't used in a few years, unsure of what path this painting would take. The pieces started creating pathways, meandering towards each other to make connections that I craved but coudln't make during the 2020 lockdown. I had spread the mosaic pieces in front of me so that I could easily choose the 'perfectly' shaped ones to fit the path. But as I progressed, I found myself reaching out for the imperfect pieces that were perfect for that particular empty space.
Soon, I discovered that every single tile, regardless of its imperfections found a place for itself.
It got me thinking - that's just like us. Regardless of life's ups and downs, each of us has our own life path that's just perfect of us.
That got me thinking : If the artwork represented life and each piece of mosaic represented a person, each person is perfect as he/she is.

This painting was inspired by a beautiful paper imprinted with lotus leaves that i found in an art store in Manhattan, New York. I used an incense stick to burn out the unwanted parts of the paper to reveal the Budhha. This symbolizes getting rid of our accumulated ‘karmas’ to reveal the Budhha within us. The paper has been stuck on canvas painted with gold symbolising ‘Nirvana’.
In Buddhism, the lotus represents purity of the body, speech and mind, floating above the murky waters of material attachment and physical desire.
Karma refers to actions driven by intention , a deed done deliberately through body, speech or mind, which leads to future consequences.
