Sketches & Doodles

Sketching requires deep observational power with quick, confident, expressive and bold strokes.

The sketch that unfolds in an artist’s sketchbook is always a unique viewpoint true to that given moment. The sketch records what the artist sees and feels in that span of time. This can be observed in what she chooses to pick out as her subject from the chaotic scene in from of her, the lines and shapes that she uses to express that and the final moment when she feels satisfied that her sketch is complete!

My sketches are a combination of live sketches and sketching from photographs I have taken. I am inspired by streets of cities and villages, and the movements of the common man.

My doodles were created during the covid 19 lockdowns. It was one of the ways that I coped with the situation.

  • The wondrous look on the young girl’s face as she holds her little kitten tenderly manifested in that moment of realisation that this warm, live creature is all hers. Yes, this cuddly kitten is truly all hers to look after, to play with and to love with all her heart. It surely is the best gift that she has ever received!

Rendering this sketch was nostalgic, bringing back those delightful moments when life was carefree and fun, and lived with curiosity, a sense of adventure and wonder.

I invite you to participate in these emotions and relive similar moments of childhood joy.

  • This painting was inspired by personal photographs of the artist’s collections of street children residing near Chowpatty Beach in Mumbai, India. A young girl confidently holds her own in conversations with a friend. She has a curious and animated look on her face, carrying herself with grace. She is sure of her thoughts and seems to be listening with great attention, and is ready to give an honest opinion. The girl’s stance is positive and relaxed as she leans against the wall with one hand on her lip.

The quick and bold brush strokes depict her energy and self-assurance. The skilful use of the lighter brush strokes in the background by the artist subtly convey the message that she is ready for action even though her stance is relaxed. The use of black ink on beige paper give it a slight vintage quality making it a striking and unique work of art to hang on the right wall.
